The evolve-filter (EF) model is a spatial filter-based numerical stabilization technique for convection-dominated flows. While EF offers a simple, modular, and effective approach for simulations, it is well-known that large filter radius values can lead to overdiffusive results. In this talk, we present novel strategies to address the overdiffusivity of EF when using a large filter radius. These strategies are based on the variational multiscale (VMS) paradigm: the evolved velocity field is decomposed into large and small resolved scales. The filtered small scales are then used to correct the large scales, reducing overdiffusion. These new VMS-based algorithms demonstrate improved accuracy compared to the standard EF approach in both full-order and reduced-order simulations of flow around a cylinder at a Reynolds number of 1000.
